Kennelly launched his mission by shelling out big bucks to score a fourth row seat along the aisle, “so I could escape easily.” “The perfect opportunity to get their attention during the break in action,” Kennelly said. So he brainstormed a plan, having already learned from prior Goo Goo Dolls shows that singer Johnny Rzeznik often does a little speaking part before the band plays “Name.” Reeling from the fact that Nightshift had been put on hiatus due to his bandmates’ personal commitments, Kennelly came up with a crazy thought: What if he tried to join his musical heroes on stage in Columbus? I was so inspired by their music that it made me want to pick up the guitar, learn to play and start a band.”įast forward 10 years, when Kennelly noticed the Goo Goo Dolls had a show booked for The Palace Theatre in the Ohio state capital. “The Goo Goo Dolls quickly became my favorite band. A sweet song about moments and dreams that have passed you by, all the while growing up too quickly, getting pulled away by the current that is life,” Kennelly said. “The music just spoke to me in a way that has never moved my soul before. I can’t remember if I saw them play any songs by the Goo Goo Dolls, the band whose platinum-selling “Name” first inspired Kennelly, a 2009 Center grad, to become a musician.
